Barbara Jean CORBY (10/15/1917 - 03/19/2012)

Barbara Jean was born October 15, 1917, in Spokane, WA to Dr. John Henry and May Brodrecht, a nurse. Her mother died when she was a baby and her father eight years later. Barbara graduated from North Central High in 1935 and followed her sisters
(a "trio of heartbreakers") to the University of Idaho and Gamma Phi Beta. Barbara graduated in 1939 with degrees in English and teaching. Barbara worked as a dental assistant, then married Robert Boyd in 1941, moved to Hollywood. WWII began, Robert went to war and died in action. They had no children. Barbara was working at the Spokesman Review where she met 'Cooper'; they married in 1947, moved to Pasco, raised four children and launched a successful business, the Star Cleaners. The family was involved with the Episcopal Church of Our Savior and their dynamic pastor, Lester Kinsolving. Barbara was also a past-member of the
Elks Club, the Eastern Star and the Eagles. She and Cooper divorced after the children were grown. After that, Barbara worked as a clerk at Grigg's. She was married to John Corby in 1977; they enjoyed square dancing near and far. John passed on in 1997. He had seven children from a previous marriage.
Barbara enjoyed family get-togethers, lunches at the Pasco Senior Center and especially luncheons with her neighborhood 'Tuesday Club', of which she and neighbor Noma Beers were original members, and neighbor Nita Rettinghouse always provided the ride!
For the holidays in 2011-2012, Barbara travelled around the region with her son and his wife, visiting grandchildren and great- grandchildren. In 2011, Barbara was back on the dance floor for a Valentine Day event honoring seniors 90 years and older. A beautiful photo of Barbara is a family treasure of her 'last dance'!
Barbara moved to Republic in the spring of 2011, with son Richard, Carmella, and dog Jamokey. The transition went smoothly, waking up to the view of the lake, the mountains, and the local deer herd. Every Saturday night, Barbara would grin and tap her foot throughout the Lawrence Welk Hour. Barbara had a busy 2011-2012 holiday season with visits, telephone calls, cards and photos, from family and her many grandchildren. These meant a lot to her. When asked how she was feeling, Barbara always had a positive reply! The Hospice staff appreciated her easy-going, never-complaining manner as she greeted them with a smile and amazing courage. We will remember her quiet strength, clever sense of humor, and her generosity, compassion and concern for others.
On the eve of Spring, March 19, 2012, Barbara died from cancer, at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents, her aunt, two sisters, two husbands, and three children. She is survived by one son, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and seven nieces and nephews and their families.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Spokane and Bergh's Funeral Home. The immediate family is observing a 49-day prayer period for Barbara. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Carol loved to do a variety of activities, she was involved in Pond Society, Garden Club, Tops and her greatest passions were Square Dancing followed by Mariners Baseball. She was supportive, creative and understanding. She would build positive and fun ways of doing things to make a job not seem like a job at all. She was someone you could tell your life to with the comfort of knowing it would stay with her. She was a collector of collections and a people watcher too; she loved to see people smile. Carol will be missed but never forgotten by all who knew her. When we think of her it will be with a tear in our eyes, but a smile in our hearts, from your boys,

GAGE, Bruce Ballinger

Born February 10, 1918, Bruce Ballinger Gage was the oldest of four sons born to Edwin Russell and Florence Ballinger Gage in Shoshone, ID. Growing up on the Dietrich family farm he ran the plow horses and helped build a landmark dairy barn.
After graduating valedictorian from Dietrich High School, Bruce finished business school at Gooding College where he earned room and board by shoveling coal into the dormitory boilers.
From Gooding, Bruce moved to Spokane to work for the Grange Cooperative Wholesale. His coworker Ernie Clouse and wife Phyllis introduced him to Phyllis's sister Eleanor. It was love at first sight. Bruce and Eleanor married in 1940, and the rest is history.
Bruce joined the U.S.
Army in 1942 and served in recruiting and induction, and base recreation. He was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in 1945.
Returning to Spokane, he resumed work at the Grange Wholesale and eventually became General Manager. With a lift in his walk and a pansy in his lapel he would often walk to work.
After 25 years with the Grange, Bruce became Public Relations Director for Inland Empire Goodwill Industries and later sales manager for both Carlon Industries and Wabash Life Insurance. He then started CC&F (Courteous, Considerate and Friendly) Sales, where he supplied "natural snack" packaged soups and drinks to business offices around town,
Dad was a gentle man who enjoyed gardening, square dancing with the Spokane8ers, bowling with Eleanor, RVing, pinochle, Scrabble, coin collecting, driving his Pink Cadillac and visiting with family and friends. He and his beautiful red-headed wife of 72 years greatly enjoyed the birds and sunsets at their year-round Deer Lake home. From there he volunteered to pick up and deliver for food banks and Meals-on-Wheels, helped Eleanor with her Avon orders and enjoyed the Deer Park Senior Center luncheons and activities.
For the past 3 ½ years Bruce lived, laughed and joked with the loving and caring staff of the Spokane Veterans Home.
Dad died April 4, 2012 at the age of 94 with loved ones at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first grandson Matthew Gage and his brothers Jack (who was killed at Guadalcanal in WWII) and Kent Gage. GODLEY, Edwin Earl

We sure hope heaven can keep Edwin busy with a do-si-do, a scuba dive, and some of his other favorite things. He will be hard to catch, much like a big silver in Koocanusa. How many of us were led astray heading down a ski hill trying to keep up with him. Ed loved the open-air freedom of riding his motorcycle or plowing the powder with a snowmobile. Oh yes, and he did drive truck for 53 years - 50 of which were for Consolidated Freightways. Great things came out of his wood shop, like an 18' sailboat, Christmas surprises, and furniture. Ed enjoyed hunting, camping, golfing, walking and gardening, but most of all he enjoyed living life to the fullest. And family and friends meant the world to him. Edwin was born on June 3, 1928 in Denton, MT. Living his early life in Montana; he later moved with the family to a farm near Spokane and spent the rest of his days there. Ed graduated from Gonzaga Prep. He started his truck driving career early and also joined the Army National Guard HHC 1/161st (Mech.) Infantry. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant E-8 in his 30 years of service. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in the Spokane Valley and he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. The Lord called him home April 2, 2012 from Spokane Valley, WA. He was 83 years young. Ed was preceded in death by his son Michael; his first wife, Geraldine; and brother, John. He is survived by his wife, Edna; his sons Daniel of Las Vegas, NV and Patrick of Marysville, WA; his daughters Georjana of Medical Lake, WA and her husband John, and Angelique of Seattle, WA and her husband Mehdi. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law Gerry, his nephews David, Gregory, and Jeffery, and his four step-children, Judy Lebahn, James Grim, Freda Grim, Ronald Grim and their families. Reception will be held at the Western Dance Center, at 1901 North Sullivan Road, Spokane Valley, WA. In Lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to your favorite charity in honor of Edwin Godley.
Oh, did I hear someone sneeze?
Please Lord, make sure you ......."BLESS EDWIN"

ZIMMERMAN,
LaVerne
(Grady)
(Age 89)

Laverne Zimmerman passed peacefully in Spokane, WA on March 20th, 2012. She was born in Oklahoma on August 27th, 1922. Her family left the dust bowl for the Dalles, Oregon when LaVerne was five years old. She later attended Lincoln High School and Behnke Walker Business College in Portland. In 1943, she was hired as a rate clerk for the Union Pacific Railroad. A few years later, LaVerne met the love of her life, Doug Zimmerman, and they were married in 1951. Together they built a beautiful home in Portland, and in 1962 she retired from the railroad to raise her two sons. Incredibly involved in her sons' lives, LaVerne was a Cub Scout den mother, Little League scorekeeper, and never missed a football game or track meet, rain or shine. Some of her fondest days were spent feeding a house full of teenage boys. Every kid in her neighborhood knew they were welcome in Mrs. Zimmerman's home.

LaVerne spent her retirement years in central Oregon (Redmond and Prineville, respectively). She enjoyed square dancing, cooking, and reading, but above all, spending time with friends and family. In the fall of 2009, LaVerne and Doug joined their youngest son in Spokane. LaVerne is survived by her husband of 60 years Doug Zimmerman; her sons Bryan Zimmerman of Boise and Randy Zimmerman of Spokane; her brother LeRoy Grady of Redmond, OR; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Her selflessness and love will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice of Spokane. A memorial service celebrating LaVerne's life will be held at a later date.
